Homeschool Review: Library and Educational Services LLC #hsreviews #libraryandeducationalservices #whowasbookseries

I kind of have a thing for books and I am quite sure that you can never have too many.  I have always loved to read and have wanted to make sure that my family enjoys it as much as I do.  Now that I am a grandmother, I want to make sure that my sweet little man has a quality stash of books to enjoy as well, so I was excited to find some pretty cool little books over at Library and Educational Services LLC.   For purposes of review, I was able to choose one title from their Who Was . . . ? series, one CD from their Lifehouse Theater CDs series, and a selection of titles from their Reinforced Hardcover Library Binding Nonfiction books.

Because I am currently challenging myself to read 52 books, I decided to build my selections around an author that I had not previously read.  Neat, huh?  I started with Who Was Jane Austen? in order to get a real feel of the author so many have loved through the years.  This 107-page, softcover book starts by sharing that Jane Austen is still considered one of the most interesting people in history and explains how each of her six published books has touched the hearts of readers.  Jane Austen was a master of character and connection as she creatively wove the lives of ordinary people into the most interesting stories.  She makes us see ourselves and realize that we can accomplish great things in the day-to-day.  I enjoyed the look at her life and the historical notes included throughout the book.  The black and white illustrations were fun as well.

After reading Who Was Jane Austen?, my next selection was the fully dramatized audio adventure Pride and Prejudice from the Lifehouse Theater CD series.  It was exciting to step into the pages of the book and hear it come alive.  I listened delightedly for a little over an hour and was sad when it ended.  Although I knew who Jane Austen was, I had no idea how much I would enjoy her writings before now.  She is funny and her characters are charming.  I was excited to continue reading.

After listening to the Pride and Prejudice  Theater CD, I enjoyed reading the Real Reads versions of her very first book, Sense and Sensibility, and her second book, Pride and Prejudice.  The Real Reads books are shorter versions of classic literature.  They feature the reinforced hardcover library binding that we all love because they make books durable for lots of use.  Each book is 64-pages long and filled with colorful illustrations.  They tell a condensed version of the classic story (without sacrificing content and main ideas) and encourage the reader to read the full novel in all of its original splendor.  I like that these Real Reads offer children an easy introduction to great literature and also whet their appetite for more.  Background information is included at the end of each book, as well as a Further Reading section, suggested websites to visit for more in depth learning, and even films to watch that have been adapted from the original story.  Each book ends with a Food for Thought section that includes critical thinking questions, a look at overall themes, and an examination of style.

This is such a great way to help children fall in love with literature that I decided we had to own them all.  The Real Reads collection is the perfect start to an outstanding library.  There are currently 17 titles included and you are going to want to own them all, too.

Once I finish the Jane Austen collection, I think I will begin reading the Charles Dickens collection.  And after that, I just may begin the "scary story" collection that includes Dracula, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Frankenstein.  I have never read any of those books and these shortened versions will be the perfect touch.

If you are anything like me and enjoy perusing the actual pages, you can request a catalog of your very own from Library and Education Services LLC and see the bigger picture of all of the wonderful resources that they offer the homeschooling community.  I know that you are going to appreciate the opportunity to purchase quality inspiration for your family at wholesale prices.  I am looking forward to sharing my Real Reads library of books with my sweet little man -- and any other precious grands that might come my way.  You simply cannot beat the quality provided with these reinforced hardcover books.  They are easy to hold and share and the covers can be wiped down if spills or accidents occur.  It makes my heart happy to know that these books will be loved by generations to come and I am pleased as punch to be able to introduce the classics to my little folks in an easy-to-understand way.

There is so much offered here for families with learners of all ages.  From littles to grown ups, there are titles for everyone.  Fiction, nonfiction, DVDs, and audio series -- you are going to find so much to love about Library and Education Services LLC.  To find out even more about their wonderful offerings, check out the following Social Media outlets:

Homeschool Review: American Literature Mid-Late 19th Century #hsreviews #hewitthomeschooling #lightningliterature

Literature is one of my favorite subjects so I was happy to receive Lightning Literature & Composition's American Mid-Late 19th Century from Hewitt Homeschooling Resources for study at Long Leaf Academy.  Written for high school students in 9th - 12th grades, this curriculum helps students to acquire college-level skills in composition through a directed response to great literature. We have found all of the Lightning Literature courses are easy to implement and simple to understand and the required literature easy to obtain.  This is the second American Literature course in the Lightning Lit & Comp family, but it is not necessary to complete them in order.

In American Literature: Mid-Late 19th Century, students read and study Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, poetry selections from Walt Whitman, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, Jack London's The Call of the Wild, and Bret Harte's short story "The Outcasts of Poker Flat."  How's that for an all-star cast of awesome reads?  Some of my all-time favorites are included here.

For ease of instruction, Hewitt Homeschooling Resources offers the American: Mid to Late 19th Century Pack which includes the Student's Guide, Teacher's Guide, and the four books (listed above) that will be studied throughout the 18-week course.  You can also purchase both of the Guides separately, if you prefer, and simply gather the required readings on your own.  Poetry and Short Stories to be read are included in the text of the Student's Guide and other required literature was easily obtained as a free download for our Kindles and Kindle Apps or off of our bookshelf.  You can also find all of the required reading at your local library.  For purposes of review, we received copies of both the Student's Guide and the Teacher's Guide.

The American Literature:  Mid-Late 19th Century Student's Guide is a 170-page perfect bound course written directly to the student (but parents will want to be familiar with it, too).  The 4 units are divided into 8 lessons and contain enough material to be considered a 1/2 English credit on the high school transcript.  Hewitt Homeschooling Resources recommends that all Lightning Literature courses be completed in one semester (that's the "lightning" part of this curriculum).  The rigorous schedule is perfect for students on an Honor's track.  Students work at their own pace for 18 weeks with basic "chunks" of assignments laid out for them.  For example, in Week 5 students are assigned to read chapers 36 - 45 from Uncle Tom's Cabin, answer the comprehension questions, read the 5 1/2 page Literary Lesson on Theme for Unit 1, Lesson 1, complete a Writing Exercise for the Unit, and write a rough draft of the assigned paper.  They can sit and read all of the chapters at one time or spread them out over a few days.  They may choose to read a chaper and answer its corresponding compreshension questions before moving on to the next chapter or read all of the chapters together and then answer all of the comprehension questions together.

So far, we have appreciated the poetry of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson and enjoyed discussing the difference in ballads, epics, elegies. idylls, and pastorals.  My daughter was impressed to compare the writings of British Literature's Christopher Marlowe with contemporary American poets. We have skipped around in the lesson order to study the craft of poetry in depth (this is perfectly okay to do) and spent some time revisiting the novels of Mark Twain and Jack London.  We have laughed and cried as we read along.

Each unit's lessons follows the same pattern:  Introduction and bio of the author which includes details about the literary selection and things to look for/think about while you read, Comprehension Questions to answer as you complete a reading assignment (or to use for testing what has been read), a Literary Lesson that teaches the craft of writing (theme, sound and imagery, humor, language), and Writing Assignments that offer practice of the skills being taught. I especially like that the readings are broken down into do-able chunks.  After reading the assigned chapters, students answer 5 - 10 comprehension questions to make sure they are reading carefully and not rushing through anything.  The emphasis is on responding to great literature through composition, not just checking off a task.

For further study (but not included in the schedule), Appendixes list additional discussion questions and project suggestions for each of the literary works studied.  In my opinion, these are perfect helps to qualify the course as an Honor's course.  Students have the option to do literature-based art projects, history and geography activities, and more.  There are Bible studies and nature ideas as well as additional reading lists.

The American Literature:  Mid-Late 19th Century Teacher's Guide  is a 56-page, 3-hole punched set of answer guides that contain grading tips, a proposed schedule to complete the work in either one semester or two (depending on the abilities/motivation of your students), answers to all comprehension questions, writing exercises, and suggested discussion questions and projects.  Well worth the money, this valuable resource helps you to follow your student's progress while encouraging literary excellence.  For easy reference, I added the Teacher's Guide to my school planning binder.  This way the answers were easily accessible and I could make sure we stayed on task.

Homeschool Review: The Wars of the Jews #hsreviews #memoriapress #simplyclassical #classicalchristianeducation

I have the utmost respect for all things published by Memoria Press and appreciate that they offer quality resources to help parents provide a classical CHRISTIAN education for their children.  The Wars of the Jews is a high school curriculum in the Christian Studies program of Memoria Press and serves as an excellent introduction to Christianity as a whole.  Based upon the book The Fall of Jerusalem, written originally by Josephus, a Jew and Roman citizen in the first century A.D., and translated for modern study by William Whiston, The Wars of the Jews offers personal insight into the destruction of Jerusalem and the subsequent spread of Christianity.

Although it is considered a "short course" that can be completed in only a few months of study, it is not one to be taken lightly.  The amount of history discovered and discussed is amazingly in-depth as it comes from actual eyewitness account.  Reading through the pages of The Fall of Jerusalem is like taking a peek into a series of personal journals.  You can see, hear, and feel the battles raging around you.  How cool is that?

The Wars of the Jews set consists of the following three parts:
  • The Wars of the Jews Student Guide (26-pages) serves as a workbook to make sure that students understand what they read in the text.  It gives the breakdown of chapters and offers a space to fill-in-the-blank as you read and study.
  • The Wars of the Jews Teacher Guide (35-pages) is a replica of the Student Guide with the answers for all of the lessons included.  The pages are numbered exactly the same for easy reference.  Additionally, it includes a 30-question Josephus Test and Answer Key.  This comprehensive test has students fill in vocabulary words, identify imporant people, places, and things from the book, recall specific quotes and who said what, complete short answer discussion, and label and draw on a map.  There is even an opportunity for Extra Credit.
  • The Wars of the Jews text (141-pages) begins in Book V, Chapter 6 of The Fall of Jerusalem.  The text is illustrated throughout with black and white pictures and contains endnotes for further clarification. It ends with Book VI, Chapter 10.  Each paragraph within a chapter is numbered for ease of translation.

All three books are softcover.  The Student Guide has a glossy finish for durability.  There are no designated lesson plans so students are able to work at their own pace through the set.  There are 10 lessons, a comprehensive review, and a final test included in this curriculum.  The lessons specify which chapter(s) are to be read in order to complete the corresponding pages.  Each lesson contains a Facts to Know section (pictured below) and 5 - 10 short answer Comprehension Questions.  Several lessons also include a short Vocabulary section.

The translated text was not a difficult read once we became accustomed to the writing style.  Since the translated text begins with Chapter V of the original text, there is a bit of a learning curve to reading it, but once you have begun you will step easily into the story and have no problem following along as the action transpires in the Roman/Jewish war.  An earlier study of this portion of history  whetted our appetite for more information, so we were enthralled from the very beginning of the text.  I think that you will find it just as interesting as we do.  The constant reminder that GOD takes care of mankind offers encouragement to us as we walk through the day-to-day that is our crazy life.

As always, Memoria Press has given us well thought out resources that encourage a Kingdom focus.  The early history of Christianity is one that we should all be more familiar with and reading about the early struggles help us to better appreciate our freedom to worship.  I am using this set as a personal study so that I can help the middle schoolers in my ministry to better understand GOD's Word for themselves.  Knowing that GOD was right with HIS people through the darkest of times helps us to hold onto the faith that HE is with us always today.

Homeschool Review: The Brinkman Adventures, Season 6 #hsreviews #AudioDrama #MissionaryStories #AudioMissionaryDrama #BrinkmanAdventures

I fell in love with the exciting Brinkman Adventures years ago, and I am always looking forward to the release of new stories.  For purposes of review, we received the Digital Version of Season 6: Underground Rising and we couldn't wait to jump in and get started to see where we would be traveling on mission this time.  How perfect was it that this season started us off with a visit to World War II since that is exactly our focus in history this semester?  GOD's perfect timing -- I love it!

Season 6:  Underground Rising contains six missionary stories in just over 2 hours of listening time.  This is perfect family listening for a long car ride together (headed on vacation or to visit family for the holidays?  Don't forget to take your CDs.) or can even be used during your family devotion time.  Listening to one episode each evening would make for some great discussions about how much GOD loves each and every one of us and would be a beautiful way to incorporate mission education and prayer into your family time.   Be forewarned though:  Once you start listening along, you may not want to stop.  And you are definitely going to want to have a map handy to mark all of the neat places you learn about.  In Season 6 alone, we visited the Netherlands, Wisconsin, India, Thailand, and Myanmar/Burma.

Underground Rising Season 6 Brinkman Adventures

Each episode of the Brinkman Adventures is based on true accounts of real missionaries in GOD's service on the mission field.  Although some names and details must be changed in order to protect their calling and keep their familes secure, all of the stories are true.  The stories are active and draw you right into the midst of them.  As we "listen", we "see".  That said, it makes it tough to choose a "favorite" story.   Each and every episode tugs at my heartstrings -- and quite often bring me to tears as I listen.  The first two episodes of Season 6 take us underground in Nazi-occupied Holland where Jewish families need help to survive and episode four reminds us to trust GOD's plan -- even when it takes you far away from home to India -- where you know no one.  Episode three reminded me that I am offered grace because I am a follower of the KING's SON.

Hearing a roomful of children and teens pray to accept JESUS as their SAVIOUR as they begin to realize what unconditional love truly is brought me to tears.  Y'all . . . this is what it's all about.  Only JESUS can change the hearts of people and these audio dramas put us right in the midst of GOD at work.  Following GOD is not always easy, but it is always, always the right path.  I need the reminder for myself -- and I want my children to hear it often.  More than anything else, I desire for my children to give themselves fully to JESUS.  I appreciate the engaging way the Brinkman Adventures encourage us to wholeheartedly follow GOD.  Every time.  Even when we don't see how.

The last two episodes grabbed my attention immediately as they introduced us to Dave and Karen Eubanks -- a Green Beret and Special Education teacher.  My brother is a Green Beret and it was a perfect calling for his life.  Listening to Dave's call to full-time missions was intriguing and I appreciate so much how GOD prepares us for HIS ultimate plan in ways that we least expect.  It is the perfect reminder that GOD works through our lives and only HE sees the big picture.  I also appreciate that when listening along might get tough or intense, the Brinkman Adventures suggest that families listen together.  The gunfire is real, the danger is evident, but what a blessing that the focus is always on the health of the family unit.  These are mission stories that you will want to hear over and over.  They never get old and they remind us what our mission at home should be as well:
Love each other.
Unite in a work for freedom, justice, and peace.
Forgive and don't hate each other.
Pray with faith.
Act with courage.
Never surrender.

One of my favorite things about the Brinkman Adventures is that you can find the backstories of each episode on the website, follow the family blog, and meet the real-life missionary family that the adventures are based upon.  There are pictures, videos, and more detailed information about each person and location mentioned.  This is a great resource that helps us put faces to the missionary stories.  It helps us to remember that they are real people sharing JESUS in real time.

Brinkman Adventures
I especially enjoyed reading through the Real Stories for Season 6 and seeing the beautiful pictures of Omie's special tea cups because I have been an avid collector of all things tea party for as long as I can remember.  Some of my very favorite teacups and teapots (pictured below) belonged to my grandmother, too, and I love holding them close as I remember the stories that she used to share with me.  What a precious memory brought to mind while listening to the first two episodes.

The "extras" provided in the Real Stories section are fascinating and cover a wide variety of information that really makes a huge difference in how you listen to the audio dramas. Don't skip this section.  It is an invaluable resource for your homeschool.  There are videos, recipes, maps, and more.  It's fun to journey along with real-life people as they visit the same places the Brinkman family has taken us.

You are going to want to make sure and check out the Facebook page, too.  I think you'll enjoy the podcasts links and featured articles there that direct us all to a life of on-mission service.

And finally, jump on over and order up some adventure for yourself.  Brinkman Adventures is offering a 10% discount for my readers this month.  What a great way to kick off Fall!

We love every episode we've listened to and are always anxiously awaiting the next.  This is a the perfect time to share it with your family -- and stock up for Christmas, too.

As always, I'd love to hear how GOD speaks to you through the Brinkman family escapades.  Please, please share with me what HE is sharing with you and yours.  Let's speak life together.

Homeschool Review: Fitting Words (Roman Roads Media) #hsreviews #RomanRoadsMedia #FittingWords #Classical #Rhetoric

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.    Proverbs 25:11

I've taught a public speaking class for several homeschool families throughout the past eight years as each of my children reached high school.  It's always been a fun class and I know the kids have learned a good bit about standing in front of their peers and sharing a peek into who they are.  We've covered the basics of speech and learned how NOT to be a distraction when you have a captive audience, but now that I've had the opportunity to begin working through the Fitting Words Classical Rhetoric (complete program) by Roman Roads Media, there's SO MUCH MORE I want to teach.  I'm happy that my "baby" still has this last year of school so that we could add classical rhetoric to her course load.

Rhetoric is defined as the art of effective verbal communication and Fitting Words uses speeches from history and Scripture as the basis of instruction.  Taught by author Jim Nance, students are continually reminded that GOD created us to use words to communicate and HE wants us to use them in such a way that we teach, move, and delight others through truth, goodness, and beauty.  Our words need to be informative and powerful, but they also need to be elegant.  We want to be able to Biblically persuade others as we conversate.

The goal of Fitting Words is to create orators (our students) who are filtered -- not through the society in which they live, but who are filtered through the Bible.  This curriculum offers a Christian perspective of rhetoric and seeks to redeem the pagan teachings of old.  Students are reminded that GOD spoke the world into being and are directed to HIS WORD.  There is weekly Scripture memory (you know I love that!) and GOD's Word is the living, breathing textbook used in every lesson.

I was excited when my package arrived and couldn't wait to get the box opened up and the curriculum out of it.  Fitting Words Classical Rhetoric arrived at my house packed safely in this handy bag and it is perfect for keeping all of the program's components safe and sound between lessons.
There is so much here to unpack.  Fitting Words is a video-based course and the complete curriculum consists of the following components:

  • Textbook -- 394-page, hardcover, divided into 30 Lessons
  • Workbook -- 171-page, coilbound, softcover includes exercises for each lesson.  This is a consumable resource which means that students should be writing in its pages.  You will need one workbook for each of your students.  It is a necessary component of the class.
  • Exam Packet -- shrinkwrapped, 3-hole-punched, loose-leaf pages which contain the Reviews for 9 Exams, the 9 Exams, and Judging Sheets for 6 Speeches (The actual giving of speeches begins in Lesson 13.)
  • Video Course (DVD + Streaming) -- case of 4 DVDs.  Each lesson has a main video that students watch before they read the lesson and an application video they watch following the reading of the lesson.  There is also a Pre-Exam video to be watched as part of the Exam Reviews.  Videos are 6 - 28 minutes in length.
  • Answer Key -- softcover, bound book that contains all answers for Lesson Exercises and Exams with points suggestions for scoring Exams.  This serves as your Teacher's Guide and gives suggested schedules for using Fitting Words as either a one- or two-year course as pictured below:

We are utilizing the one-year plan (on the right) with my daughter working four days a week and here's the deal -- Fitting Words had me from the moment we pushed play on the DVD.  The very first thing in the very first lesson is an encouragement to read the Preface and the Introduction from the Textbook which explains the overall structure of the curriculum and the goals that Mr. Nance has for the student.  He tells them to STOP THE VIDEO if they haven't read those pages and come back once they've read them.  I just love that he makes sure that students understand that ALL parts of a text are important. I will go one step further and suggest that you make sure to read the Foreword, as well.  Rhetoric in the Hands of an Angry Mob tells us that if we want to be faithful Christians, then studying rhetoric is not an option.  It is a necessity for us all.

Mr. Nance really does want the very best from each student and this is evident in his teaching style.  He reviews, he teaches, and he reviews again continually pointing out ways that the students can find success.  Additionally, he intertwines Scripture through every lesson and explains that we will be studying the very best speeches so that we can deliver the very best speeches.  I appreciate this approach to a class that can sometimes be very scary.

After explaining that the goals of rhetoric are found in truth, goodness, and beauty, students were directed to take out their very own copy of GOD's Word and read through Psalm 119.  This is a Thinking Deeper discussion question.  Mr. Nance shared that Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and a great place to find examples of the rhetoric goals.  Do I even need to tell you how much I love this?  I'm a firm believer in making the pages of a Bible your very own and I was thrilled to see my girl following through.

Another HUGE part of the video lessons is the Application Lesson.  After students watch the initial video and read in their text, they return to the video for a short lesson of one rhetorical figure.  Students learn about Figures of Speech and Figures of Thought.  They will revisit these figures at the end of the text, but are being introduced to them slowly throughout the year.  This is also where students receive suggestions for how to complete the discussion questions found in the text (Thinking Deeper), work through the accompanying exercises in the workbook, and receive their Commonplace topics.

The Commonplace assignment is one of my favorites.  Commonplaces are written in a Commonplace book which is nicely bound and portable.  Mr. Nance gives a specific theme for quotes to be written down and regularly read through.  Students are encouraged to use the quotes in conversaion.  I'm sharing a page from my daughter's Commonplace, but offer a little grace as you view it.  She said that it was not written with intentions of anyone but her seeing it, but she allowed me to take a picture anyway.  :)

I am more than happy with the fact that Fitting Words takes a Christian approach to rhetoric.  I am in love with the entire program and ecstatic that we have found (or it found us) a curriculum that places GOD in the very center.  With a world full of junk that can be committed to memory, it does our hearts good knowing that the speeches from the Bible are the ones being poured over and committed to memory.

The textbook consists of 30 Lessons divided into 7 Units.  These Units begin with the foundations of rhetoric, and teach students HOW to write speeches that people will want to listen to using a Socratic method of instruction.  Students will learn HOW to engage their audience through watching great speeches, listening to great speeches, reading great speeches, and giving great speeches.  The text is phenomenal and the videos are beautifully produced.  The speeches of famous orators are integrated right into the teaching segments. As delightful as it was to see and hear Neil Armstrong's small step, it was gut-wrenching to watch President George W. Bush deliver his speech to the nation after 9/11.

Fitting Words is a fabulous course for high school students, but it's also a fabulous course for adults.  I've enjoyed sitting down with my girl and watching the videos, reading through the pages of the textbook, and pouring over the speeches shared in the appendix just as much as she has  -- and I love the way it makes us both THINK.  I especially love that every speech found in the Bible that is spoken or written with a direct audience in mind is listed in the back of the textbook.  These speeches are laid out by reference, speaker, and intended audience with a title of specific quote attributed to them.  This alone is an incredible resource.
Roman Roads Media
I think that every student should study Classical Rhetoric through the videos and pages of Fitting Words.  There is even a live class option, if your high schooler migh be interested in taking that route.  You absolutely cannot go wrong using this Roman Roads Media curriculum.  Check it out!     You can watch one full lesson for FREE on the website to get a feel for how it works as well as find lots of great information through the following:
