Bread! Glorious Bread!

For YEARS I made bread.  My bread machine got lots of use on a regular basis.  And then we moved and I stored my machine away and promptly forgot about it.  Two more babies came along and the laundry tripled and then quadrupled . . . and my bread making days were gone.

Until now.

A friend and I were talking about what hurricane preparations we were making and she mentioned that she was baking bread.  That set off a wonderful memory in me -- and I was anxious to smell the lovely aroma of yeast and flour again.

So, I pulled my bread machine back out, dusted it off, and started to remember some of our favorite recipes.  I just so happened to have had all the ingredients for an easy loaf so within minutes my machine was whirling away.  The Boy Scout and Princess had never seen the bread machine -- and they have enjoyed watching it do its thing.  The Big Girls couldn't believe it still worked after all this time.

But it does -- and it made some delicious cinnamon rolls for us to enjoy yesterday.  Now, before the power goes out, I have another loaf of bread in the machine.  I'm hoping the lovely yeasty smell will fill our minds with smiles and our hearts with cheer as we watch the wind blow and the limbs fall outside of our windows.  And later, I'm sure it will fill our stomachs as we break bread together.

Easy Bread Loaf

1 cup of warm water
2 Tablespoons of sugar
3 teaspoons of bread machine yeast (or 1 small package of yeast)
1/4 cup canola oil
3 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon salt (plus a pinch)

Pour warm water, sugar and yeast into well of bread machine.  Let sit 10 minutes while yeast bubbles.  Add remaining ingredients and turn bread machine to basic.  Sit back and enjoy the smells.  This makes a beautiful loaf.

  1. I so wish I had a bread maker! I've tried making homemade bread by hand a few times. It always smells great but the texture is always off.
