Can You Dig It?

Photobucket

I love history and I especially enjoy watching it come to life for my children.  In the past, we've made sugar cube pyramids, built boats out of reeds, dressed up in costumes, made and eaten hardtack and acted out epic battles.  During the unusual cold of the last few weeks, we've even been participating in an archaeological dig at Roman Town!

The McBlessings and I have had a lot of fun reviewing and playing with Roman Town by Dig-It! Games.   Roman Town is an interactive computer game that was developed by a real-live archaeologist and presents an entire excavation from start to finish. Your children will enjoy digging up true-to-life artifacts and you'll enjoy knowing that they are LEARNING as they dig.  From terminology to historical facts, my children have learned quite a bit about the Roman culture.  Did you know that ancient Romans didn't have pizza sauce but DID have glass window panes?  Neat, huh?

PhotobucketHere's what my 11-year-old ALL BOY had to say about Roman Town. "I like how when I was digging I was having fun but I was also learning about how the Romans lived and how they would have done things and how it was so different from how we do things today.  The games they played were kind of similar to things we play today---but not really the same.  I learned that it takes A LOT of patience to be an archaeologist! Digging was the MOST FUN thing. Writing the reports at the end of the dig was the hardest part--having to figure out which word went where and making sure I understood what the words meant.  I had to pay attention to what I was learning while I was digging."

A CD-Rom that is super-easy to set up, Roman Town can be played by up to 5 players and each time they go through the excavation new things will be revealed.   For fun and easy game play, your computer should meet these System Requirements:

• Windows Vista/XP/2000
• CPU 800 Mhz; RAM 412MB; Hard Drive 350MB

Photobucket Roman Town targets kids in 5th - 9th grades, but has been enjoyed at my house by kids ages 9 - 42.   Dig-It! Games Roman Town Software is normally available  for $39.95 here but you can save almost $20.00 off of that price by using the coupon code TOS2011 to get Roman Town for $19.96!  You'll want to ORDER NOW because this coupon code is good through February 21. Your entire family will enjoy the fun of the archaeological dig--and mom will appreciate that there is NO DIRT involved!

For additional fun, you can see a preview video of  Roman Town on YouTube here and even enjoy some hands-on experience with several of the games here.  You'll learn how to correctly spell "archaeology" and they'll even show you how the early Romans made pizza.  You can also check it out on FaceBook.  Enjoy your DIG!

  1. I just want to update this post a little. Today's assignment in history was to build an Ancient Egyptian house. The youngest McBlessings went right in and got to work and called me to see--and take pictures of--their final products. The sweet boy said "this wasn't in the book, but I remember from playing Dig-It Roman Town that they put a little slant on their roof so that water would drain." He added the slant! Thanks, Dig-It! for history lessons that are remembered!
