Homeschool Review: Victus Study Skills System and Planner #hsreviews #studyskills #education #kidslovereading #literacy #read

Our homeschool is down to the very last student and she will be graduating from high school in May.  It's hard to believe that we are reaching the end of home education after almost 25 years around the kitchen table.  When my oldest daughter entered college years ago, she suggested that I make sure to include more math, more science, more grammar, and an entire course on "how to study" for her siblings. She realized that truy "learning information to take a test is important, because there are no do-overs in college."   With a high school Senior and a college Sophomore, I am reminded that it is vital that we make sure all study skills are on point and I welcomed the Victus Study Skills System as a refresher course for my "baby" this year.  The products range from primary to college grade levels and we have found them to be an excellent addition to our curriculum.

Designed to make a huge impact in a short amount of time, the Victus Study Skills System truly does help to equip your student for success.  Both the Teacher Edition and the College/Career Student Workbook work hand in hand to provide the strategy for teaching students how to learn and the Student Planner helps students determine their priorities and set goals for the year.  The 81-page Teacher Edition was written to be used with middle and high school students, but the addition of the College/Career Workbook (76-pages) to the Victus family has offered a more in-depth approach to study that helps students bridge the gap from high school to college life.  The Listening and Participation Assessment has helped my daughter become more focused in her daily tasks which in turn helps her to be more focused on her educational tasks -- and the Test Preparation section has helped her to become more of an active learner.

Providing basic information on organization, goal-setting, and finding life purpose, the Victus Study Skills System encourages students to THINK as it equips them for success in academics and in life.  The system consists of softcover, spiral-bound workbooks and folded Teacher Supplements divided into ten lessons for students of  all ages (with more teacher input required in the earlier grades).  A systematic approach to learning, Victus Study Skills offers strategic steps and specific tools to help students set goals and accomplish tasks.  One of the great benefits of this system is that you can utilize the resources with students of all ages at the same time.  Each Supplement explains how to instruct students at a given level and suggests activities that will help develop lifelong learners.

The Foundational Cornerstones in the Victus Study Skills System help students figure out
  1. Where they are now (Study Habits, Learning Strengths)
  2. Where they want to be (Mission), and
  3. How they get there (Time Management, Organization, Study Environment, PQRST, Efficient Reading, Listening, Note Taking, Test Taking, Review)
My daughter and I spent about an hour on each formal lesson, but we have spent much more time discussing the information contained in the lessons as she considers her options for college over the next few years.  The maturity that I have seen in her has been impressive and I've enjoyed watching as she becomes more organized and aware.  As a result of these discussions, she has even decided that she is ready to move out-of-state to pursue her dream of becoming an ASL Educational Interpreter.

One of her very favorite parts of the Victus Study Skills System has been the 123-page Student Planner.  I admit that she gets her love of a great planner honestly, and this planner is top-notch.  I like that it begins by having students think about and write out their very own Mission Statement and take an honest look at the values they hold dear.  It teaches the importance of setting Objectives, developing an Action Plan to meet those objectives, and prioritizing a daily to-do list.  After they walk through this, students find an undated weekly calendar filled with LARGE squares for each day of the week AND a space to list their weekly to-dos and priorities.  These pages include inspiring and encouraging quotes and even list odd facts that just add a spark of fun.  There is space for cultivating a Life Plan and keeping records of yearly grades.  It really is a perfect planner.

My eldest daughter graduated with her Masters of Occupational Therapy last year, but she maintains that her biggest hurdle in college was feeling confident when it was time to take a test.  She had a tendency to psych herself out on test days.  My prayer is that I have better prepared her siblings  with an arsenal of test-taking skills and strategies.  The Victus Study Skills System is a good tool to do just that.  The testing strategies and test formulas offered present valuable practice for improving grades and taking the stress out of the many tests that they will all face in school and in life.
