I'm headed off to summer camp this week with a fabulous group of middle schoolers (6th - 8th graders) and the greatest group of volunteers to ever grace the planet.  It is of the utmost importance to me to have top-notch people in place to shepherd our kids and we are super picky about who we invite to hang out with them and pray over their hearts.  We make sure that our kids are surrounded by fine folks to stand beside them and point them to JESUS.  Our middle school ministry volunteers are the very best there are.  They shower grace and mercy and compassion over all of the raging hormones that gather for Bible study each week -- and they do it with the biggest servant's heart you can imagine.  We are intentional about finding wise men and women in various seasons of life to come alongside our kids in mentorship roles.  We know that MEN are crucial for our boys and I was excited to get my hands on the new book, WISE GUYS:  Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You by Kent Evans to aid our pursuit.

Kent invites readers to step into the pages of his life as he looks at the important roles that wise men have played in helping him become the man and leader he is today.   With moving and humorous anecdotes, he introduces you to 16 men who GOD placed in his path to shape and mold him.  He explains the personality types that all young men need to be surrounded by in order to best succeed and he shares that "regular" guys can make a world of difference in the hearts of teens by walking alongside them and offering hope and strength.

What I like most about this book is that it is real.  Kent gives real advice about how real men can change the world by simply pouring into kids.  The middle school boys that I have the awesome privilege of working with are a prime example.  The men who volunteer their time with our guys are making a huge impact on our community -- and real men everywhere can do the same.  Men who will teach by example that it's okay to take time to figure yourself out, encourage others, pray spontaneously, and sign up and pitch in to help others offer invaluable service.  Boys need to hear this message, but most importantly, they need to see it in action.  WISE GUYS:  Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You offers practical advice on making it through life.

Each chapter focuses on one specific man in the author's life -- and the good news is those men are everywhere.  I would love to put a copy of this book in the hands of every male volunteer at church in both the children's ministry and middle school ministry as we work together to raise strong Christian character among our students.  But first, I'm sharing my copy with my 17-year-old son.  The "Lessons Learned" and "Questions to Consider" sections at the close of each chapter will make for great pondering for him over this summer break and I can't wait for him to be inspired by the 11 tips found in the final chapter that will lead him to be a wise guy hunter of his own.  What a perfect way to end a book -- by inspiring young men to carefully identify the "helpers" on their journey and gather lessons of their own.  That's the beauty of WISE GUYS.  There is a beneficial action plan in place that offers wisdom to all who read it.  And I highly recommend that all men in your life read it. WISE GUYS would make a most excellent Father's Day gift and would also be a phenomenal gift to all the male graduates in your life.  Our men need each other -- and this book is a great place for them to realize just that.
