The Curiosity Files

Photobucket

We've spent quite a bit of time over the past few weeks talking about the fact that GOD is our ROCK.  HE is the foundation upon which we should build our lives.  If I teach my children nothing else, I want them to understand that.  I want them to KNOW that GOD loves them and that HE wants what is best for them in this life.  I want them to each  build a strong relationship with HIM and allow HIM to be the very basis for all that they do.

There is a story in Matthew 7 that talks about the wise man and the foolish man.  The wise man built his house on a rock--and when the storms of life came, his house was still standing.  The foolish man built his house on sinking sand--and when the storms of life came (like they invariably do), his house crumbled.

Our discussions of GOD as our foundation and the wise and foolish men in Matthew led us perfectly into a unit study on QuIcKsAnD--that sinking sand upon which the foolish man built his house.   The Old Schoolhouse (TOS) has put out an incredible new series about all things obscure, abnormal, and bizarre entitled The Curiosity Files--and Quicksand was our study of choice.

Designed for children 8 - 13, The Curiosity Files take you on an exploration of some really cool things and put you right in the middle of the action by making you an "Official Lab Spy" for that wacky and lovable Professor Ana Lyze.  There are crossword puzzles, math exercises, vocabulary lists for Elementary, Middle School AND High School, crazy-fun, hands-on experiments, Bible Studies and more included in each of the 9 Curiosity Files studies.    With topics ranging from Puffer Fish to Cicada Killing Wasp, The Curiosity Files will do much more than peak your curiosity.  They will open up an entirely new world of learning for you and your children. (Click on each of the topics listed to view a sample of them and explore THIS PAGE for examples of the other topics found in The Curiosity Files.)

What I enjoyed most about our study of Quicksand was the fact that I could print out the study, place it in a notebook, and let my children work at their own pace.  The All-Boy McBlessing (11) simply could not get enough of the 85-page study.  He grabbed it right up and started working immediately.  Naturally, he thought Quicksand was the "coolest thing ever!"  My 9-year-old had to have more help than her brother.  A slow reader, she is easily discouraged when she starts to stumble over words.  That was actually not a problem this time though because her older sisters (15 & 16) certainly didn't mind "helping" her through the study.  They thought that Quicksand was the "coolest thing ever!", too--but just didn't want to let on how much they were enjoying it!  Everyone enjoyed getting their hands dirty with the gooey mess of homemade quicksand made right in our very own kitchen--and they enjoyed tasting the edible version as well.

We enjoy obscure, abnormal and bizarre here and can't wait to try out another one of The Curiosity Files.  We are looking forward to learning more about this wacky, wonderful world that GOD made.  Proverbs 19:8 says To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper. We are having fun learning and acquiring wisdom this year.  I HIGHLY recommend your adding one or ALL of The Curiosity Files to your studies as well.  You'll be so glad you did and your list of things you NEVER wanted to KNOW will stretch your brain.  (Did YOU know that quicksand is a non-Newtonian fluid?)
