Write with World

Photobucket

My sweet MainMost is a writer at heart and has dreams of writing the next great American novel.  He's really THAT good and is able to put words down on paper in a way very few can do.  I love reading the things he pens and his writing is one of the things that first endeared me to him.

I have always enjoyed writing as well.  (I kept a journal for much of my life before children and used to write poetry and short stories.)  With two parents that enjoy the written word, you would think that our children would find great pleasure in writing too. WRONG! The Senior and the Sophomore write -- in journals, letters to their future husbands, stories and poems -- but the younger two have not yet caught the writing bug.  Especially the Boy Scout!  He absolutely HATES to write.  And writing is such a critical skill -- I believe that writing well is one of the most important things that we can teach our children.  Because of this, I knew that we really needed to focus on writing with the Boy Scout this year and I've been looking for just the right program to grab his attention and keep it!  I knew that I would need to find something that he would like as soon as he opened the pages of the book.

You can understand my delight in finding just that program!  Write with World, a middle school writing curriculum published by the same folks who publish God's World News and WORLD Magazine,  is designed to teach students how to write with purpose and become better writers over a two-year time span.  I am so glad that it found us for the Boy Scout's 7th grade year.  Suitable for students in 5th - 9th grades, I plan to continue using it throughout the summer and am excited to see how motivated he is becoming as we work through the pages of the full-color textbook.

When the Boy Scout and I talked about Write with World before he began using it, I explained that I felt like I had not taught him enough in the area of writing skills.  We discussed how important writing is and he agreed that he needed to focus on that skill set more.  Divided into 4 units with each unit broken down into 4 lessons that contain 5 "capsules" of writing exercises, Write with World takes your student from basic sentence and paragraph structure to full-blown fiction narratives in the first year.

Written in an easy-to-understand conversational tone, students can simply pick up Write with World and get to work.  At the beginning of each Lesson, writers find a list of everything they will need to sufficiently complete what is required.  All of these supplies are easily found at home (a notebook used as a Writer's Journal, Thesaurus, Dictionary, glue stick, pen, pencil, tape, index cards, etc.) and will give your child the tools needed to become an effective writer.  Written by writers FOR writers, Write with World will inspire your students and make writing a joy instead of a chore.

The Teacher's Guide gives a detailed overview of what your student will learn and gives suggestions/prompts to help you help your child THINK.  There is a great emphasis placed on the creative mind and learning how to use what GOD has blessed us with.  The Teacher's Guide even helps you provide specific feedback and facilitate revision in such a way that your child understands that you value their writing -- you are encouraged to encourage and build up your child.  Now, what mom wouldn't love that?

Oftentimes a company's "Statement of Beliefs" will motivate me towards buying and using their curriculum more than anything else.  I fell in love with Write with World early in the Introduction to this great new book.  Read for yourself the words that inspired me most:

Write with World aims to produce young writers who love writing, can write effectively, and intelligently share ideas, beliefs, and their worldview.  We hope to support a generation of young believers who aspire to use their writing skills in the service of GOD's Kingdom and explain effectively the reasons for their beliefs.

Above ALL else, this is what I desire for my children -- that they will use ALL of their talents in the service of GOD's Kingdom. Write with World has seen my heart and they have produced a wonderful tool with which I can help my children realize their dreams and seek after GOD's heart themselves.

You can purchase the full-year curriculum for $95 or you can purchase Year 1 and Year 2 together for $165  HERE .  The full-year curriculum gives you a student textbook and a teacher's book with upcoming access to additional online content.  (That translates into plenty of work to keep your writers writing!) Beginning with the new school year, the website will contain extra writing prompts, examples and a teacher's forum.  You can check out the sample lesson of Unit 1 and even read the Introduction to the Teacher's Book. {I was inspired by the Introduction and couldn't wait to begin!  I think you will be too.}

AND by the 2013/2014 School Year, there should be a High School version as well.  Neat stuff, huh?
